Sensitive Stomach Issues Solved

I have a 2yr old Labrador Retriever who was previously on a Blue Buffalo grain-free. He’s had a pretty sensitive stomach with very very loose stools since he was a young puppy which is why I changed him to a grain-free diet. For the most part, the grain-free diet seemed to help but not always. I always thought it could be something else and wanted to introduce grains because of some of the issues surrounding grain-free diets. I tried Hills Science per my Vet’s recommendation and that was a disaster. I tried Hills Sensitive Stomach per my Vet’s revised recommendation and that continued to be a disaster. Finally, I tried American Journey Salmon an Brown Rice based on reviews, reading the ingredients list, and my own research and his stool has never been more firm and healthy-looking! (It’s weird to be excited about this but after having to deal with such a mess I am excited that clean up is so easy!) It’s worth noting that the Blue Buffalo Grain-Free and Hill’s products were both chicken-based so I believe either chicken or wheat/gluten were causing his issues. Other notes: He’s a lab so he eats anything and therefore can’t comment on picky eaters. The food does have a mild fishy smell (and my dogs breath when he’s done eating) but I don’t mind it at all and I was initially worried about that.

Shocking Oversight (hormone, antibiotic, caged, and GMO food)

I adopted my dog at 2mths old, he’s 8mths now. He was on this prior to me adopting him, so I kept him on it and felt okay about my decision when I read the ingredients. I just was looking at the idea of using freeze dried dog food and remembered I needed to cancel my subscription because I’ve got a whole super large bag that I’m no where near opening. I won’t need to open it until 6mths time. So I cancel, come to this product page and saw the question about what temp is the food processed in, there was no answer so I started scrolling to see if it had been answered before. Then I came across this which was answered by Chewy- Is this antibiotic and hormone free? Answer by May 01, 2021 The meats used in American Journey are not free of antibiotics and hormones, but they are sourced from USDA inspected facilities and all of the meat used meets USDA, FDA and AAFCO guidelines for use in food. Ingredients used in American Journey pet food does not meet cage-free or free-range criteria. We cannot guarantee that any of the ingredients used in the American Journey formulas do not contain GMO’s. I am SHOCKED!!!! I’ll finish this bag of food and make plans for the other but my search for dog food has officially begun.

Unable to find information on Pet Nutrition Alliance for this diet so unsure if the recipe was made by a DACVIM (Nutrition) or ECVCN, Nutritionist with a PhD in animal nutrition, Nutritionist with a MS in animal nutrition or anything. Does have an AAFCO statement for the recipe being formulated to meet the nutritional levels for All Life Stages (ALS). An ALS diet often has higher calories than the majority of household pets so generally not recommended as there's a tendency for obesity in pets fed such diets. The bag is covered in petfood marketing cliches - 'Real salmon as the first ingredient," describing wheat, corn, soy, or poultry byproduct meals as 'unnecessary' when these are all very nutrient-dense ingredients that are often key to making a complete and balanced diet for dogs. Byproducts are organ meats that are very nutritious - nothing nefarious, and meal means they have been ground to uniform sized particles. Smaller kibble sizes than I prefer. My dog ate it just fine, but will not be continuing to feed as nutritional DCM is a concern for my pet and without an obvious full time licensed veterinary nutritionist it is not worth the risk.

Devoured, so cost justified

I have 2 pit mix females that I've had since they were approximately 8 weeks and are now nearing 8 years. Over the years I've tried a multitude of brands and flavors with hits and misses. We primarily used Purina One until the costs skyrocketed during pandemic and at times it was unavailable. I then switched to dog chow because it was more affordable. Then I began to notice increased shedding, dull coats and dandruff. I tried this brand and flavor when I got it on sale and they gobbled it up faster than any other food I've tried. My issue is the expense but to see them looking better and being more active made me recheck the very strict budget I have and make the switch to this food. These dogs are like my children and are also my protectors so I'm choosing to give up something for myself to give them something better.

My husband and I are very picky when it comes to feeding our animals. My dad worked for consumer food and pet food companies and my husband grew up on a farm as well as worked for a local garden and feed store. We also needed a dog food to help with our dog's skin condition and sensitive stomach. We tried Purina ONE and it just didn't work for our lovable hound. Also, my husband is not a big fan of Purina for dogs. After doing lots of research I found America Journey. My husband and I were very pleased with the ingredients in the food and the price (military budget)! Our dog does a little dance every time it's meal time. He loves the food that much! Also, his skin condition has cleared up and fur has grown back. We are very happy with American Journey dog food. We can't say enough about it!

Winner Winner Salmon Dinner

Well, I wasn’t expecting this kibble to be a game changer..but boy has it! Cooper devours it before I have a chance to add any wet food to it. We love American Journey. We had been getting the Salmon & Sweet Potato Grain-Free kibble. He would only eat it mixed with some canned American Journey food. He always gobbled that right up. I decided that I wanted him to get in some healthy grains for a well-rounded nutritious diet. So I decided to go with this since the only difference is the added healthy grains. He is absolutely obsessed with this food! He no longer even waits for me to mix in the wet food. I love this for my boy. Cooper is a 10 year old Lab mix (he looks all lab). At his last vet visit, the doc commented that he’s a very healthy boy. She couldn’t get over how beautiful his teeth are. Proud momma here :)

Best dog food for sensitive dogs!

I have a 3 year old lab who has had a rash on her tummy since we got her as a 7 week old puppy, vets gave us antibiotic after antibiotic that would clear it up but not keep it away for long. After about 2-3 months it would come back. After doing some googling I decided to try a fish diet food, and it helped immediately!!! Her rash went away after a year of fighting it! She has been happy and healthy on this recipe “salmon, brown rice and vegetables”. I’ve recommended it to everyone I know who has dogs with sensitive skin or other issues and they’ve started using it as well and it’s helped. Stella, my lab, loves the taste! It’s pretty smelly food, so we keep it in a food bin, definitely has that “fishy aroma”. But have no other cons.

I got this food as it seemed it had great ingredients, more affordable and would sit well with my dogs. Unfortunately, my 3 dogs have been itching none stop, shedding way more than usual and getting bald patches over their bodies. My dogs have never had any skin issues until this food. I always get salmon, but it seems this is mixed w some chicken based on the ingredients. Also, I’ve noticed they go poop way more often than usual. I will be switching brands.

Give it a try

I tried this on the BOGO deal because the price equalied out to being around the same price as Kibble and Bits or Pedigree dog food (both cheaper, easily found anywhere brands). My dogs eat it, but aren't as enthusiastic about it. I like the ingredients. My dogs are big and I would like bigger chunks, but this is OK. I like to use these chunks to shove into treat dispensing toys. My boyfriend loves it because it doesn't stink. My only legitimate complaint is that I've bought 4 bags originally and one of the bags was ripped. Chewy sent me a replacement and the replacement ripped during shipping and handling. Great job on Chewy for replacing the original bags. I think what is happening is that the bags are a heavier plastic and is shifting around in the boxes and wrinkling up. Once it gets a miniscule hole in the bog, it continues to rip unless you tape it up. Like I said, good food. I like it, dogs don't complain (they probably want pizza more, but who doesn't?). I recommend trying this food out.

Much better

For some odd reason, my dogs just would not eat the food we had been giving them for the past few months after I bought a new 40lb bag I gave them a bowl and it was like they were forced to eat it only eating very slowly which may i say that my 67 pound border collie labrador German shepherd mix has never done in his life and the puppy is a very well eater too if you catch my drift they will eat anything and everything i have given my dogs a variety of different foods over the years from natures domain to crave dog food which crave is their favorite but hard to get now i got the next best food i could these past few months and all of a sudden they hate it I'm guessing a change in formula but i won't be getting it again now i have about 35lbs of dog food that i will be giving to the shelter. And my dogs will be fed this food from now on. they all love it! and they have beautiful shiny coats and much less "waste" during pick up which is amazing i got a bag of salmon and a bag of beef which i have yet to open but my dogs are probably getting tired of fish so i wanted to change it up a little thanks chewy!
