Questions & Answers

11 Customer Questions

Where are the cans manufactured? Does Canidae use a co-packer for the cans and if so, who manufactures them? Thank you

Answer by ChewyOct 10, 2019
All their products are cooked in U.S. facilities. They have their own facility in Brownwood, Texas named Ethos Pet Nutrition where most of their products are made. Some of the ingredients used in their products are sourced from outside of the USA like the Lamb, as it comes from New Zealand and the Salmon from Canada.

Is this a GMO product?

Answer by ChewyApr 28, 2019
Although CANIDAE is unable to guarantee non-GMO sourcing at all levels, they choose to use non-GMO ingredients whenever possible.

What is agar-agar?

Answer by ChewyNov 18, 2019
Agar-Agar is used as a binding ingredient. This means it's used as an emulsifier and as a thickener. Agar-Agar is sourced from red seaweed or seaweed.

Are the cans BPA free?

Answer by ChewyFeb 17, 2022
CANIDAE cans are BPA Non-Intent. This means that the cans do not intentionally include BPA, but the third party manufacturer that produces their cans does not guarantee that there is no carry over from cans which may include BPA in the same facility. Any trace amounts of BPA fall well within current FDA guidelines.

I have 5 cocker spaniels and when Acana recently discontinued the formula I purchased I bought another Acana food that was similar to what I was buying. Unfortunately my cockalier, Bill, didn't like the taste or the texture of the new food and didn't want to eat at all. I first ordered the Canidae canned food to get him back to eating, because all he wanted was my cooked chicken and rice, and he loved it from the first bowl. I then purchased the kibble and gradually mixed it in with the soft food. He loves it and he eats his breakfast and dinner down to the last lick. I will now feed him only Canidae chicken and rice, mixed with the Canidae chicken and rice kibble. If you have a dog that is picky this will certainly change the way they eat.

First case I had of this food in the fall of 2023 was ok. After that I got a case and every can in the case had what appeared to be black mold growing around the rice in the food mix. Chewy was great and sent a replacement case, but some of those cans show a similar issue that seems to be starting, although no where near as bad as the first case. I contacted the company asking about recalls, they asked for photos (which I sent them), I have not heard back. I will be discontinuing the use of this food. The most current case arrived in Jan. if there is any sign of discoloration in the new case, I have been discarding the cans and will not reorder this food.

I’ve seen here before another customer had the same comments about this. I switched from canidae before because I felt the quality and formula changed. My dogs seemed the best on the Chicken and rice so I just returned to it. In the beginning I purchased some cans at retail store and was pleased because it looked like the old formula and quality. So I ordered again from chewy and received what seems to be the old formula. What’s the reason ? It’s more airy and sticks to the sides of the cans. I would not like to think chewy is selling an inferior or rejected product. But why??

First of all, Chewy was quick to refund me. Thank You for the excellent customer service. I ordered 4 cases. Opened one can and I could barley chisel it out of the can. I then opened one can from each case of the other cases. Same Result. I received the old (yellow) style label. The food also had a greyish color and because of that, I will NOT donate it to anybody. I went to a brick n mortar pet store and bought several cans (yellow) label and they seemed to be okay. I see Chewy is now selling a new label of this same recipe.

The consistency of this food is irregular. Sometimes it is more runny, and most recently, very dry. This batch I just received today is very dry and hard. I could only scoop the center part out. The rest was unusable. Perhaps it is just a bad batch, but I am not feeding it to my dog - it may be a problem in the recipe or canning production. Time to find a new food.

I just switched Maddie to this food. I was concerned because reviews I read were all over the place regarding how dry & compact the food was in the can. It is a very dense pate like food but none of the cans has given me cause to be concerned. Maddie (Great Dane) is not food dependent so it's always a pleasant surprise when she likes something. She gets 1/4 can of Canidae 'all life stages' with each meal to augment her kibble (different brand). I add about 1/4 c hot water too and she gobbles it down. Let's talk packaging (cans)...about 4 of the 12 cans were dented. This is concerning as dented cans can compromise the contents. The case was shipped in a larger box/shipment so it is clear the mishandling did not happen during the shipment to my house. I ordered this case along with a case of Merrick and 8 of the 12 cans of Merrick were majorly dented too. Chewy, you should not be shipping food with damaged packaging! 5-Stars for the food Canidae | 2-stars for the damaged cans!

I'd been so happy to find a wet food that isn't stupidly grain-free and has good ingredients and a chicken base. But during the beginning of the COVID period, they were out of stock for a few concerning weeks, making it hard to make what I had last for my dogs. And when they were finally back in stock, the formula had clearly changed, but there was nothing about it on their website or here. The food smells different, one dog will no longer eat it unless I mix something else with it, and the food sticks to the cans and makes it impossible to recycle. Maybe this new formula is an improvement, but the lack of announcements and the few details I just mentioned make me suspicious that this was some cost-saving measure. I will be, sadly, switching food for my dogs yet again.

I originally tried this brand due to one of my littles developing an allergy to Peas. It was very difficult to find a dog food that didn’t include them in their recipes, but Canidae was a win! I have 3 special needs dogs, one with IBD, one with swallowing and choking issues who can’t chew well, terrible constipation issues that we were having to treat with medication, and another with allergies. I stumbled on the Canidae Chicken and Rice, as well as the Multi-Protein formulas, and all three are thriving! Labs came back beautiful on my most delicate little, he had kidney issues while on other brands. No flares of IBD, no choking, no more meds for bowel problems or constipation for my little guy, no more allergy issues! Plus- THEY LOVE IT! We will be staying with this brand for sure!

I have ordered the Canidae Chicken & Rice Formula for All Life Stages three times in the last year. The food has always been very solidly packed in the cans, but the quality of the last order we received is not the same as the others. The food is so hard at the top and down the sides of the can after opening that it is difficult to get any of the food out of the can. Only food from the center of the cans has been soft enough to be useable, so I am wondering how healthy it is to feed my dog. I have opened three cans out of one of the two cases I purchased last, and they have all been the same. It is almost like it was over cooked and solidified in the can. I have had to throw away at least a third or more of the food from each of the three cans. Wondering if anyone else has run into this same issue. The code on the bottom of the cans are: 052A1 CCRD 21:34. The second case has the same code on the cans, so I hope that they will not be the same, otherwise I will not be purchasing anymore Canidae canned dog food due to quality issues.
