About BLUE Buffalo

Blue Buffalo began with unconditional love and some furry inspiration from a large breed Airedale, Blue. When Blue's family started a pet food company, their vision was clear. They wanted every pet parent to be able to feed their pet with the same care they would feed family. So they created the #1 natural pet specialty food to help furry family members live happy, healthy lives. Of course, they named it after Blue.

What makes this a senior formula? Reduced calories?

Answer by ChewyJul 09, 2018
This food has added glucosamine and chodroitin to relieve joint pain. It's also full of lean chicken for the right amount of protein and amino acids.

where is this dog food manufactured and where are the ingredients sourced?

Answer by ChewyNov 15, 2022
As stated by the manufacturer: "All of our foods and treats are manufactured here in the United States. Blue Buffalo sources as many ingredients as possible from the U.S., and most of our grains and meats come from the U.S. There are occasions when we source meat from other countries. For example, the lamb we use can be free range from the U.S., Australia or New Zealand. When the ingredients are not readily available in the U.S., such as vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, our suppliers work with only reputable foreign companies, and subject all ingredients to rigorous quality testing. None of our meats or grains are sourced from China. All of our ingredients are USDA or FDA approved and inspected as applicable."

This is for “senior” dogs but no age is indicated. What is the age category for senior dogs?

Answer by ChewyDec 02, 2021
Dogs enter their senior years at different stages, depending upon their breed and size. If you have a giant breed dog (think Great Dane) they will be mature at five to six years old; smaller breeds, such as Chihuahuas, reach senior status at 10 to 11 years old. If you're unsure, please consult with your veterinarian.

Does it contain a good amount of Taurine?

Answer by ChewyMar 20, 2021
This recipe does not contain added taurine within the ingredients. Taurine is found naturally within meat, with the level varying depending on the type of meat.

Scout loves this food. I decided to change from the food he has been eating for the past 14 years because he became listless about eating, skipping meals occasionally, and seemed to be forcing himself to eat. He has always been an enthusiastic eater until recently. I gradually transitioned him to a little of the wet food mixed with 1/2 cup of the dry Blue Buffalo senior food twice a day. He loved it immediately. His enthusiasm for meal-time has returned, and he has had no digestive or bowel problems. The only reason I haven't given both the dry and wet food 5 stars is that we haven't been using it for very long.

I have a 16 year old Chihuahua who has always been a very picky eater. One day inDecember, he didn’t eat in the morning and when I got home in the afternoon, he had been vomiting, diarrhea non stop. Short story, brought him to the vet who tried to prepare me that if he doesn’t eat, this may be it. After an IV of fluids, gave me prescription GI wet food and we all hoped he would eat, which he did that evening, phew! Anyway, a couple of weeks later, giving him multiple feedings a day, I began to transition him to Blue Senior. Right away, he loved it and usually ate it on his own without hand feeding him. I also heat up the food to help stimulate his eating it. My other dog has also helped him eat because she hovers over him because she wants it to. Anyway, I tried it because I saw reviews saying their fussy eaters liked it and it did the trick with him. He had lost a lot of weight (he’s normally 4. 1/2 pounds l) and weighed 3 lbs but I am pretty sure he’s back up to his normal weight now. He has more energy and life and him eating the food made a big difference.

Good but

Lola has been on Hills Oncology canned food since diagnosed with liver cancer a month ago, but due to the extremely high cost, I asked the vet if I could switch to this as it seemed pretty similar, but she really doesn’t seem to care for it at all I’m afraid.it looks like good quality and all but with the nausea she is experiencing it just doesn’t appeal to her right now. I just received a case of 24 cans that I haven’t opened and have to see if maybe I can return it? ( and also cancel the auto ship) Everyone in customer service is so helpful, but I haven’t had the time as we are doing palliative care with the dog.

Husky love

I have been purchasing another food from a local store and it just seem to get worst as for as quality and it seemed to be drier than the last time and my dog diesel

I have been purchasing another food from a local store and it just seem to get worst as for as quality and it seemed to be drier than the last time and my dog diesel which is a husky would not eat it anymore. So since i get his dental treats from Chewy i looked through the dog food and decided to order this blue. It is so much better never dry, he really seems to Love it. He had stopped eating his hard food is the reason i started giving him the can food. But now he is eating his hard food again a little at a time, i have always left some in his bowl about 3 cups Incase he gets hungry during the day and he will eat a little at a time over 3 days. I only give him 1 can of blue a day in the evening. He is healthy and happy. Thank you BLUE and Chewy

I have a rescue pup with an unknown background and age. The vet recommended senior wet food. I used to make it from scratch, but it's too time consuming. This option is affordable and has understandable ingredients. I mix it with dry food and use raw toppers for a balanced meal, and she loves it.

Yum yum yum

I was fed BlueBuffalo dry food since I was a baby puppy. When I was young, the wet food was too rich for me and gave me diarrhea. But BlueBuffalo always was my favorite food (with occasional Kibble&bits 'candy' treats). This last year I lost my appetite and I lost about ¼ of my body weight in spite of food supplements for senior dogs. Since the NewYear we tried wet (canned) food and FreshPet refrigerated food and I am eating again without stool issues. I LOVE the wet food for seniors, especially chicken and grain-free. For some reason I do not particularly like other meats or fish as much as chicken. Yes, I am picky, and probably spoiled.

I bought this when my senior GSD was ailing, and not interested in eating kibble or much else during his last few weeks. He preferred the other Blue Buffalo canned food that had a more pate consistency - this one has chunks of veggies - and we were lucky that he had the canned food to eat. Sadly he passed away about two weeks ago, and since his sister GSD isn't much into the canned food, I have given it away. I highly recommend Blue Buffalo because it is nutritious and I knew he had the best food he could manage in his last days with us.

My dogs love the food. I am very much dissatisfied with the amount of dented cans. If I were purchasing at the pet store, I surely would not select the dented cans out of concern for the quality of food. I’m not sure the problem is with providing non dented cans. The dented cans anre several and are usually in the middle of the 12 packs, almost as if they’re being hidden. I ordered 2 12 packs and both of them had multiple dented cans.

Caused diarrhea

There is a long backstory to get to the point of this review. My 12 year old maltipoo developed bladder stones last year. At that time I was feeding him Honest Kitchen dehydrated food. He had been eating it for many years without any problems. The vet recommended Royal Canin SD for the bladder stones. He was eating the Royal Canin for 6 months. He made the transition to that food without any difficulties. He had no issues with the Royal Canin with the exception of some constipation. My dog required surgery for his bladder stones and his type of stone is not responsive to the Royal Canin diet. My vet said there was no reason to keep him on the special diet. She did recommend keeping him on canned wet food. And that is how I came to buy the Blue Buffalo food. I travel with my dogs and wanted a food that is readily available. You cannot always find some of the other brands in rural areas. I wanted a senior diet and one without any animal byproducts. The Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe Senior Chicken dinner seemed to fit the bill. I tried to transition him to this food, I really tried. I started with just 10% Blue Buffalo for 3 days and then went to 25%. He developed diarrhea. I cut back to 10%. Then tried again to increase the amount of new food. I tried for 6 weeks to transition him to his new food. He develops diarrhea every time I increase the amount of Blue Buffalo. Last week he started regurgitating his food shortly after eating. I finally gave up and started him back on the Honest Kitchen dehydrated food. He’s had no diarrhea since stopping the Blue Buffalo. This is not a dog who typically has gastrointestinal issues so I was quite surprised that he couldn’t tolerate it. As far as the food goes, the cans were not dented, the food was not oily and it looked like any other wet, loaf style, dog food. He liked it and would eat his entire meal. I don’t really know why he has issues with it but I can say with absolute certainty that it caused my dog to have diarrhea.

Excellent food dogs love this

I have 2 dogs. One is elderly almost 16 yr old lab with significant liver and digestive issues. The other is 5yr old lab. Both love it! My oldest dog throws up most food anymore and gets a lot of irritable bowel symptoms. She does much better with this than any of the other things we've tried. She'll eat it and keep it down. My younger dog loves it! He wishes he could have only this however I mix his with dry food of a different brand (due to Price). Both have decreased gas, more energetic and seem to be responding well. It's been a couple of weeks.
