Our Newfoundland, Huckleberry, recently turned 2 and as a result is now without “berries”. Our vet recommended Gastropexy (attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent GDV) at the same time as neutering. We love and trust our vet but were hesitant because Huck weights 153 pounds and the thought of what he could do with a cone was not a good one. However, the man we got Huck from told me his wife heard from a friend that their big dog suffered GDV and they had to put the dog to sleep because they did’t have $7000 for the emergency Gastropexy! Quite the dilemma. BellyGuard to the rescue!!! We ordered 1 XXL and it worked so well we ordered another so if/when he has an accident (or dad puts him on the lead outside and forgets to put the BG in “potty mode”) we have a backup available. He doesn’t mind it at all and his incisions are healing wonderfully! I can’t recommend BG highly enough and have included a pic of Huck in his “onesie”.

The BellyGuard Recovery Suit offers an ideal solution for post-surgical care for dogs. It provides significantly more comfort compared to traditional cones or neck rings. My puppy was unable to lick his incision while wearing it. Despite his usual tendency to freeze when wearing a harness or coat, he remained at ease in this perfectly fitting onesie. Additionally, the convenience of not having to remove the suit for bathroom breaks was a major advantage. Simply unsnapping the back and securing it to the front made it exceptionally easy to use. It was worth the money spent.

She hasn’t started to try to lick or scratch so I can’t tell if it will really prevent damage to the sutures- I’m worried that it won’t protect her if she scratches but I don’t think the cone would do any better. One issue is that it may be irritating her vulva as the tail hole seems to rub on it - she’s licking it a lot, and sometimes it is exposed and sometimes not. I think it would be good if it were exposed- it’s not near the scar. In fact I wonder if it could be cut away more so I didn’t have to unsnap it when she goes out to pee and poop.
Saved us from the cone
We never would have made it the two weeks post surgery with any sort of cone or inflatable collar. This suit fit our beagle well (she is 15 inches and about 23 lbs)

She was able to sleep better and was much more relaxed for her two weeks of recovery. Her legs did sometimes get caught in it after laying down curled up. Overall definitely recommend!

First of all, I cannot imagine putting Charlie through the inconvenience and cumbersome apparatus of a cone! This suit is SO much more humane and comfortable for Charlie to recuperate in. Though his was a tad too large, ordering a smaller size may have created a too-tight fit right in the most tender area where neutered. Easy enough to unsnap and roll up before doing potty breaks, AND I made it even easier by rolling it up toward his shoulders, grabbing the "under" flap to bring up and over his head, so it was not going to get in the way of peeing on it! GENIUS!! Well-made with soft fabric and launders very well, too! I believe Charlie was proud to wear it!!
I have always hated the cones!!!!
My little girl is a Cavachon. She stands about 5/6 inches off the ground.. we live in Vermont and those cones do not work for little dogs. They end up shoveling

Say nothing about how inconvenient they are every place else. This Wednesday was the perfect answer and worked very well. Much more comfortable for the dogs.

The e-collar (cone) scared the daylights out of both girls. They were much calmer and relaxed in the recovery suit. It was very easy to open when they needed to go outside.

I was going to take it off the next day so she got an early release. She’s been very good about leaving her incision alone and seems to be healing well. I feel the onesie worked as intended.
