Rats are social animals who like to spend time with humans and fellow rats but also need space and time to themselves. Rat habitats not only keep your pets safe, but provide the stimulation and space they need to thrive. Rat habitats offer different features:
When it comes to choosing rat habitats and enclosures, go as large as you can accommodate and offer your rats different toys, beds, nesting materials, and perches so they can play, nest, climb, and sleep without crowding one another.
A good habitat for a rat is a spacious wire enclosure that allows them to climb, hide, and play. A good rat habitat has a solid floor- not wire or mesh- proper ventilation, and bar spacing that's less than 1/2 inch apart.
The ideal size for a rat habitat depends on how many rats you have, their species, and their sex. The general rule of thumb is that you need 2 cubic feet of floor space per rat (and then some more if you have males), prioritizing horizontal over vertical space.
In addition to food and water bowls, you should put rat-safe bedding, litter, nesting materials, beds, and chew toys in your rat habitat. Some rat parents also like to put in surfaces like tunnels, ledges, and perches so their rats can climb and explore.
