How much food do parakeets need?

Parakeets do not need very much food. Small birds usually eat 1/2 teaspoon to a teaspoon of pellets or seed mix per day, while larger ones may eat closer to a tablespoon of bird food a day. Consult the parakeet food package for suggested feeding amounts and guidelines. You should feed your budgie some fruits and vegetables every day, too, making sure to carefully wash and cut them into small pieces first.

Just be sure not to feed your bird anything that may be toxic—avocados, mushrooms, onions, and garlic are a definite no-no, and citrus fruits may upset your budgie’s stomach.
