Do you need a saddle pad while horseback riding?

While you do not absolutely need a saddle pad while horseback riding, it can be very helpful. Saddle pads or blankets provide extra cushioning between the horse and saddle and protect the saddle from dirt and sweat. Many horse saddle pads are also made to absorb shock, distribute pressure and improve saddle balance.
