Why are bridles used in horseback riding?

Bridles are used in horseback riding as a means to communicate with and control the horse. The rider pulls on the reins, manipulating the bit, which applies pressure inside the horse's mouth. This pressure signals to the horse which way the rider wants him to move.

What are the different parts of a horse bridle?

The different parts of a horse bridle are the headpiece, the bit and the reins. The headpiece is that part that goes over and around the horse's head. Depending on the bridle style, the headpiece may include components like a crownpiece/headstall, browband, noseband, cheek pieces, curb strap, throat lash, and possibly a flash. The bit fits inside the mouth, resting on the gums between the molars and incisors, and the reins extend back toward the rider to allow manipulation of the bit.

Do horses mind wearing bridles?

Horses do not usually mind wearing bridles as long as they are properly fitted and placed. It may take your horse some time to become accustomed to a new bridle, so be patient at first and seek expert help with fitting if you need it.
