What is the jelly stuff on the bottom of my aquarium plants
Answer by • Feb 28, 2026
The “jelly” substance at the bottom of the AquaZen Aquarium Live Plants, Package A: Eleocharis Acicularis 'Mini', Alternanthera Reineckii 'Mini', Alternanthera Rosaefolia plants is a sterile nutrient gel, similar to agar. It’s used in tissue culture (also called in-vitro) plant propagation. The plants are grown in a lab under sterile conditions rather than in soil or aquatic farm tanks. The agar-based gel provides moisture and nutrients while keeping the plants completely free of pests, algae, and pathogens.
Before planting, customers should gently remove the plants from the cup and rinse off the gel thoroughly under room-temperature water. The gel is harmless to fish and invertebrates, but it should be removed, so it doesn’t break down in the aquarium. The plant mass can then be divided into smaller portions and planted directly into the substrate.
