- Treats behavior conditions, pruritus, postspaying urinary incontinence, chronic pain in dogs and anxiety, behavior conditions, and as adjunctive treatment of neuropathic pain in cats.
- Works by blocking the reabsorptin of serotonin and norepinephrine. By increasing the amount of both of these, Amitriptyline helps the brain regulate mood and behavior.
- Not given on an as needed basis, but continously and may require several weeks to see a positive response.

Since there would be a gap, the pharmacist offered the option of 50 MG (that I would split), and to call the vet, explain the situation, and provided free shipping. This was above and beyond my Mickie dog and I are very grateful.
Anti-Anxiety medication
I have two special needs cats (one with severe colitis flareups and one with megacolon and chronic dermatitis) and this medication helps immensely with their temperament
I have two special needs cats (one with severe colitis flareups and one with megacolon and chronic dermatitis) and this medication helps immensely with their temperament. Both cats were gotten as rescues around age 5 y/o and both had fairly traumatic backstories. Before being on medication for anxiety, both had behavioral issues. This is a prescription drug so you will need to ask your vet if it's something that would help your cat (not sure if other critters can take this). I'm writing this review mostly to help people that already have had this prescribed at the vet and are wondering if the quality is the same as what they get from the vet. It is the exact same medication that I had been getting from my vet so I'm guessing it's just the one manufacturer. I do have one thing to say regarding this particular pill. They come in 10mg tablets but my cats take 5mg so I need to cut them in half. The pills do cut cleanly but it would be helpful if the company that produces them would add a scoring mark for the 1/2 way point. I put the pill halves in empty gel capsules because they are tiny-tiny and I want to make sure they actually get the medication and not spit it out. I'm guessing the taste of these is bad because I can't trick the cats into eating them in treats or mixed with food.

We tried it in wet food, then in a pill pouch, then in part of a pill pouch so as not chew, next were Sheba treat stick pieces with a hole in the stick made by a paperclip big enough for the pill. That worked for 4 days straight. 1 for the Human. Previously, it was...you can fool me once but you won't fool me again. Here, you eat it. Moving on to the last resort before returning the cat to the vet's office was a click pen which gives a gel to apply to the inside of the ear. Success for the Human. Happy cat. Better living thru chemistry. So far no agressive attacks to Human body parts. Billy Boy is now more mellow and husband is happy without the wounds. GO GEL!
Coating comes off too easily

For a long time Chewy used the manufacturer Unichem for its amitriptyline and everything was fine. Now they use Advagen and the pills SUCK. They are orange and the coating comes off very easily. I usually hide the pill in my cats’ food and they have no problem eating it. Now they won’t eat these pills by Advagen because the coating comes off so easy, leaving a bitter taste. Chewy, please go back to Unichem!
Works great! I wish there was a 5mg version

I tried the transdermal version of this, did not see much of a difference whatsoever (and it was expensive) so I switched over to this. He doesn’t spray anymore, there have been less fighting, he’s still clingy but that’s okay. He’s just a better cat. I do wish it came in a 5mg size, it’s not a huge deal as I can cut the pill in half but it makes for a gross tasting pill. That’s really my only complaint though! Would definitely recommend for any anxiety ridden kitty.
Cat smells/tastes it through everything

My vet prescribed her this, and after 4 times taking it through a pill pocket, my cat refuses to take it anymore because she can smell and taste it through everything -- I've tried mixing it with wet food, chicken stock, putting it in her mouth, but then she will start drooling and spitting it out. There has to be a way to make this taste better, because I feel mean trying to give this to my cat.

Inconsistent quality
These are generic and come from various manufacturers. One manufacturer sends a pill that is ineffective and our cat starts right back into his inappropriate urinating
These are generic and come from various manufacturers. One manufacturer sends a pill that is ineffective and our cat starts right back into his inappropriate urinating within a few days. The other manufacturer seems legit and the results are consistent. And there’s no way to specify which you want so it’s luck of the draw and the times we get the bad ones we are in for a month of cleaning up urine everywhere and starting back from scratch when the next month’s supply comes. (And hoping it’s not from the same manufacturer)
Seems to be working well for my cats inappropriate urination
