About This Item

Treats behavior conditions, pruritus, postspaying urinary incontinence, chronic pain in dogs and anxiety, behavior conditions, and as adjunctive treatment of neuropathic pain in cats.
Works by blocking the reabsorptin of serotonin and norepinephrine. By increasing the amount of both of these, Amitriptyline helps the brain regulate mood and behavior.
Not given on an as needed basis, but continously and may require several weeks to see a positive response.
Contact your veterinarian before making any treatment changes. Serious side effects are rare.
Behavioral disorders may also require the use of additional medications, daily modifications to routine, environmental changes, supplements, or other medical therapies.

Recommended Dosage

Always follow the administration directions provided by your veterinarian. Amitriptyline should not be given on an as-needed basis; to be effective, it needs to be given continuously and may require several (e.g., 4-6) weeks of treatment. If discontinuing amitriptyline, the dose should be slowly tapered over 2 to 3 weeks to minimize the risks for signs of withdrawal. A more rapid taper can be instituted when significant antidepressant toxicity is present.

Store in a well-closed container. Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Protect from light.

Amitriptyline HCl is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat certain behavior problems such as separation anxiety, fear of noises and anxiety in dogs as well as urinating out of the litter box, spraying and anxiety in cats.

Yes, this medication should be given with food.

Can I stop this medication if my pet doesn’t seem any better?

Always contact your veterinarian before making any treatment changes. This medication should not be abruptly stopped.

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Always make sure that your animal has access to plenty of fresh water. Contact your veterinarian immediately if any abnormal bleeding, seizures, fever, or collapsing is seen. Let your veterinarian know if your animal has worn a flea and tick collar containing the pesticide Amitraz in the past two (2) weeks.
