Learn More About Advantage II From Our Team of Experts

Important Information

Fleas rise to the top of your pet's coat as they die, so consider it a triumph if you start seeing more fleas at first, after treating your pet. If you’re still seeing fleas after application, it may be because your pet has picked up new fleas from the environment, which may include other pets, surfaces and outdoor areas. It may take up to 30 days to break the entire flea life cycle. Additionally, you should also treat sources of new fleas (i.e., carpet, yard, etc.) to ensure complete flea control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Advantage II on My Cat?

Advantage II is for cats and kittens 8 weeks of age and older. It comes in three sizes: Kitten (2-5 lbs.), Small Cat (5-9 lbs.), and Large Cat (9+ lbs.). Choose the right size based on your pet's weight. Advantage II for cats is suitable for both indoor and outdoor cats, but not for use on dogs.

How Do I Apply Advantage II?

Once you break the seal on the tube, part the hair at the base of your cat’s skull until the skin is visible. Squeeze the tube to expel the entire contents directly onto the skin in that one spot. Do not get this product in your cat’s eyes or allow your cat to ingest it.

Since advantage has made a step up from this product, thats why this one that has worked for years now doesnt work? So disappointing. I used to count on Advantage.

Answer by mabengirl1965Mar 04, 2026
Anytime you use the same treatment every month, the fleas, eggs, and larvae become immune to the treatment. I usually change my routine every other month or two so that there is a little chance for this to happen.

Since the product is applied to your cats neck, what about the fleas on the cats belly will they move to the neck?

Answer by ChewySep 19, 2017
The active ingredients of Advantage II work to attack the fleas, no matter where they're located on your cat.

can you use before 30 days is up

Answer by ChewyMay 15, 2021
Under normal conditions this product is effective for one month. However, in cases of severe flea infestation, retreatment may be necessary earlier than 4 weeks. Do not retreat more often than once every 14 days for kittens or once every 7 days for small and large cats. After flea control is attained, return to a monthly retreatment schedule.

If my cat weighs about 9 lbs on the dot, which treatment should I use?

Answer by ChewyMay 24, 2019
If your cat weighs 9 pounds, it's recommended to use the Advantage II Flea Treatment for Small Cats 5 to 9 pounds. Use this treatment if they're over 9 pounds.

Purchased this product for our three cats and there was never a time that it actually got rid of the fleas for the three months that we used it. We vacuumed regularly and were combing the cats for fleas and I wouldn’t say there was a severe infestation-we never noticed them on us or the carpets. The fleas just never fully died. A week after the monthly dose and we would still be finding one or two survivors and the cycle would continue. Overall it was pretty frustrating and I wouldn’t spend the money on this product again. There were no tangible results.

Moderately good control for nonprescription treatment

Elderly cat, indoor only, hadn't been to vet in almost a year. Flea outbreak in the house over winter. Cat was noticeably uncomfortable. Needed quick, low cost treatment. Had tried another common brand last year, less than satisfactory results but can't definitively say it was the treatment. Anyway, went with Advantage. Arrived,in short order. Easy to apply, cat tolerated it well. Fleas began to move to surface of his fur within hours and fall off. Cat was feeling much better by next day. Two weeks in, treatment still seems to be effective.

My cat seems to have no fleas, but this product burned his skin. He is approx 10.5 lbs and we put it at the base of his skull just above his shoulder blades. For nearly a week he was scratching and trying to lick the spot and we thought he was just being dramatic, then we started noticing little clumps of hair. In short, this product seems to have chemically burned his skin - it made bits of his hair fall out and left scaly scabs that keep flaking off. Will not be using this on him again!

Applicator is poorly designed

We used this on our 7 indoor and 1 outdoor cat. When we were done we noticed one of the tubes wasn't open all the way and 3 others still had medication remaining on them that equaled over 1 full tube. Now we don't know what cats didn't get the full dose. You need to really press extra hard when popping the tube open. As far as knowing if the whole tube was applied, the tube material should be see through. Without it being so, it's impossible to tell if the pet got it all. We still have fleas so just waiting to do the 2nd treatment when they're due. So I can't speak for the efficacy of the product and only the administering it.

My cats hate the cold, wet drops on their neck, of course, but their temporary discomfort is worth it to me. The problem is with the packing--when I opened the Chewy packing box, the flea drop boxes had been squished by the case of Friskies. I had to collect the various pieces and tape up the boxes. Some packing material inside the box would be helpful!

It was very easy to determine and pick the correct flea medication that I needed; having a picture of a cat on the front of the box made it so easy to know that this is for the correct type of animals and then it was also very easy to see what pounds this is used for. None of my cats had any allergic skin reactions to this product. The smell of this product was not as harsh as some other flea medications that I have purchased in the past.

I hate the fact I have to put chemicals on my cat. But in the south, you have too. I tried "natural" methods and they don't work. I do not let my cat roam outside, but he does enjoy the screened porch. Also, I'm sure I introduce sand fleas in the house just working in my yard. When I was on my "natural" kick, he had scabs various places on his body from fleas. DE dried his skin horrible. Regular baths dried him out and he even got a respiratory infection in the AC from being wet. Advantage is the only way to go. Keeps him flea/scab free. Keeps me scratch free from the baths.
